World Express Shipping Agencies. was founded by James F. Moran in 1937 as a Rhode Island based corporation operating in Providence and nearby Fall River, MA. By the time Mr. Moran died in 1959, he had expanded and successfully established additional ship agency offices in Boston, MA and Portland, ME.
Edward Moran succeeded his brother in the ownership of the business which had grown through the efforts of some of the most experienced and knowledgeable staff in New England. During Mr. Edward Moran’s tenure, F. Robert Black joined the Company and worked in all aspects of the business and acquired ownership in 1974. What followed was an earnest effort to build the Company into a national and international shipping agency. In 1975 a full service office was opened in Houston shortly followed by offices in Port Arthur and Corpus Christi, TX. In 1976, Kurz-Moran of New Jersey was formed in partnership with the Chas Kurz Company.
James Black joined his brother F. Robert and the Company in 1974 and was instrumental in opening the Houston office and, subsequently providing operational and marketing expertise throughout the organization. Michael Black joined his brothers in 1982 working in an administrative and sales capacity from Moran’s Headquarters Office in Rhode Island.
During the 80’s Moran continued their expansion across the US Gulf opening offices in New Orleans, LA and Tampa, FL. Upon F. Robert’s retirement in 1985, James and Michael acquired ownership of the Company and continued the efforts of expanding its presence throughout North America.
The decade of the 90’s marked significant growth as the Company acquired ownership of Boston based Patterson & Wilde Steamship Agency and full ownership of Kurz-Moran Agencies in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Over the ensuing years, Moran has continued to expand; in the Gulf, Lake Charles, LA, Galveston and Freeport, TX; in the South Atlantic, South Carolina and Florida and in California on the West Coast. The Company now has 20 full service offices serving nearly 70 ports in North America.
In 2005, Michael Black resigned from his position as Chief Executive Officer. He continues to retain his partnership interest in the Company and serves as its Chairman. James Black now serves as President and CEO of Moran Shipping Agencies and continues to guide the Company through the dramatic industry changes that have occurred this past decade. For Moran, these changes have resulted in significant advances within its own IT Department which have benefited our clients. World Express shippingnow offers major clients secure access to the Company’s data base enabling them to review historical documents and current information on all voyage accounts. Comprehensive AMS services have also been established by the Company and in the area of Port Security. Moran agents have served on various committees and have been utilized as consultants for the Department of Homeland Security. As such, Moran offers clients advice and services in this area, as well.
